Breakdown

(A poetic breakdown of a political breakdown of a pandemic’s breakdown of a free nation)

Sleeping deep in the matrix of the covid coma

that plagues the population from pole to pole

as political pied pipers spread lies and  rumors

that the group’s greater good will require your soul

In the depths of their matrix elusive danger clings

and they bid you stay under till they find a vaccine

They misrepresent numbers and the masses have followed

We’re like clones, hold the phones, here’s a blue pill to swallow

But what if a red pill, in reversing the roles,

unmasked the real threats and showed up at the poles

called out contradictions the officials reported

and exposed how fact-checkers take truth and distort it

They point to the spike like that’s all that’s at stake

while our families and freedoms and faith are steamrolled

These are not mere misnomers or simple mistakes

but precise prevarications toward insidious goals

And that’s just what happens when a people forget

that the price of our freedom was not free for our fathers

On their worst premonitions the sun soon may set

if our parents don’t fight for their sons and their daughters

Now the conscience is sacred and I have no intent

to promote only protest without courtesy and kindness

But consider the consequence of subconscious consignment

of conscience to compasses that lead into blindness

Listen, the front lines are real, so you won’t catch me denying

that first responders grow weary as they tend to the dying

But many more fronts beside hot zones are formed

Depressed and suppressed and distressed mental dorms

Some people may call this assessment dismissive

diminishing death and decrying life’s mission

But imagine the sorrow once bereaved of tomorrow

with a loved one who spent all the time they had borrowed

When a business, a livelihood, a life’s work is reduced

to deep bankruptcy files and hot piles of  debris

by race riots unchecked and health orders abused

crunch the numbers and the virus looks less risky to me

Out in public, in our stores, anywhere within doors

people fear to their cores and police their neighbors

They adopt the pugnacious, propagandized purview

From the news, “foes wear naked smiles and sit in pews”

And the questions flow in from these fearful people

“Why such vigorous dissent? You can’t argue with science?”

“Ought we not treat such sickness as threatening and evil?”

I say, “Yes, but whose hand should enforce our compliance?”

So content is the world to kowtow to the tall towers

of professional prowess, they say, house all the powers

and answers to suppress every problem we face

until, our own evil solutions must reign in their place

Constitutional rights, responsibilities, and roles

have been slain by the painless assassin, convenience

From sleek silver spoons we, from birth, are fed slowly

almost wholly by some experts well known for malfeasance

Now you see how the spirit of freedom is murdered

First “you may”, then “you must”, leads to, “pay or be crushed “

Such conditioning echoes of the frog in cold water

As he boils in his pot, a republic is abolished

For a more perfect union, to establish true justice

to insure tranquil times, provide common defense

promote welfare and liberty, for our children and friends

we must uphold this law with which we’ve been entrusted

For the sake of our future, our present, our legacy

we must not forfeit freedom by neglect or profligacy

With our hands on our hearts and our hearts hand in hand

We the People, under God, indivisible must stand
